There are numerous rodents and pests that carry infectious diseases that are dangerous to humans. Two such diseases are Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) and histoplasmosis. Both cause flu-like symptoms and a host of other problems.

 

Hantavirus is found in saliva, urine, and waste from certain rodents. Once the flu-like symptoms have set in, people infected with this virus get a rash made up of small red spots. They have a dry cough which soon turns into difficulty breathing.  The Hantavirus can also cause damage to the kidneys including failure and lung disease. Both of these can be life-threatening to humans.

 

Histoplasmosis is an airborne infection that comes from breathing in spores that have been left from a bat or bird droppings. It can also cause lung damage and is often found in older buildings that are being renovated.
